My adoring fans,

It regrets me to inform you that I will be away from home the next three Sundays, so I will not be able to update my Top Five Albums series during that time. I will be on Catalina Island the first two Sundays and then at Coachella on the third.

But do not fear, I will think of something worthwhile to put up instead.

New semester, but still old skool

Well, this is the last weekend of winter break. So sad. Lots of good stuff happened during winter break, and I am hoping that it continues into the new school semester. I have quite a workload ahead of me, but I think I can manage.

Here are the classes I have lined up:

* English 400-something-or-another: English Romantic Poets w/ Decker
* English 303: Literary Theory and Criticism w/ Becker-Leckrone
* History 451: Proseminar w/ Chung
* Anthropology 101: Intro to Cultural Anthropology w/ Fields
* Anthropology 102 (online): Intro to Physical Anthropology w/ Thompson
* Philosophy 102: Some critical thinking bullshit w/ Delaney

On top of those, I’ll be starting my new job with the America Reads program sometime soon which will consume 15+ hours a week, and I will be sticking with my gig at Michael’s Used Books for 16 hours across Fridays and Saturdays. In addition to that, I will be orchestrating monthly book club meetings and bi-weekly poetry workshops at the bookstore, AND attending blues guitar/harmonica workshops in Henderson on Thursdays. I’ll be a busy bee, trying to keep up with it all. Oh, and I won’t have spring break to utilize for catch-up either: I’ll be on Catalina Island with UNLV’s Alternative Spring Break program, a program which also requires me to do some fundraising.

Almighty Bowie who art all-knowing and all-powerful, please be gentle on my doomed soul.

Over on the left you’ll see three new pages. The first of these new pages is self-explanatory: About Me. It is basically a carbon copy of my first blog post. The second, Follow Me, has a list of all my cyber feetprints–on Myspace, Facebook, Kaboodle, etc. The third, “Michael’s Used Books in Las Vegas” offers information on this little used book store as well as links to the bookstore’s online alter-egos at Myspace, Facebook, Youtube, etc.

America Reads

I had an interview with the America Reads chapter at UNLV yesterday and I was hired! Starting in January, I will be going to yet-to-be-determined elementary schools in the valley on Monday-Wednesdays to tutor struggling students in reading. I think this will be a great opportunity to serve my community, get teaching experience, AND make some extra money. I’ll still be working at Michael’s Books on Friday and Saturdays so there is no worry there. I don’t know how I’m going to handle it all though. Two jobs, six classes, plus other planned activities (book club and poetry readings at the bookstore, blues guitar/harp workshops in Henderson, etc). Oh boy oh boy I’ll be busy.

In tea news, my “Green Tea Starter Set” from Den’s Tea came in the mail today. A bunch of samples of green tea plus some informative pamphlets on Japanese green tea for $3 shipping included. What a deal. I tried the sample of Sencha Fuka-midori that came with the set and I love it. I’ll will definitely be buying more of it in the future. Much better than the Maeda-en brand Gold Sencha I have been drinking for the past week. Also, the tea from Den’s has a noticeably larger amount of caffeine in it. I had two infusions of it and I’m bouncing around the house.

Time for a shameless plug! This is the store I work at and in all honesty I would rather spend my time here than anywhere else in all of sleazy Las Vegas. It’s called Michael’s Books and Movies and it’s on the northeast corner of Tropicana and Pecos. I recently started a Myspace page and a Facebook page for the store to try to get the word out so if you get the chance add us as a Myspace friend and/or a Facebook fan and support independent bookstores. Special 10% off coupon sent to all new friends and fans while supplies last! Here’s a little run-down of the store stolen from the Myspace profile:

BUY–SELL–TRADE

Michael’s Books is located on the northeast corner of Tropicana and Pecos in the Big Lots shopping center, right next door to the Bank of America. Chosen as one of the top five bookstores in Las Vegas by Citylife, Michael’s Books has been proudly serving the literary needs of Las Vegans for over a decade. Please drop in sometime and browse our inventory, or just stop by to chat with one of our friendly employees. We have all kinds of books including popular fiction, romance novels, mysteries, true crime, classic literature, biographies, and non-fiction history/philosophy/religion/wicca/self-help/parenting/art books. In addition to books we also have a wide variety of movies on both DVD and VHS. Classic movies, drama, action, horror, westerns, something for everyone! And we can’t forget our fabulous selection of CDs and LPs. Classic rock, classic jazz, new age, classical, country, oldies, soundtracks, and more!

Yes, she was a fantastic singer. But this $3 thrift store find, which I now have on ebay, makes me love her so much more:

Judy, you just bought me a new harmonica amp. Thank you.
