Week 25: February 1st

1. Foreigner by Cat Stevens
The “Foreigner Suite” is mind-blowing. The rest of the album can bite me. I can listen to that 18-minute long suite over and over. I especially love the last 4 minutes, the “I’ll Go Where True Love Goes” movement. On his 2006 album, Yusuf reprised this portion and turned it into it’s own song. When I first put the record on and heard the piano tinkling out that song I was so elated.

2. The Best of the Velvet Underground
Big songs for this week: “Rock ‘n Roll” (my new phone ringtone), “I’m Waiting for the Man,” “Heroin,” and “White Light/White Heat.”

3. Driving Rain by Paul McCartney
The Coachella lineup for this year was announced a couple of days ago and Macca will be headlining the first day along with people like Morrissey (yay) and Leonard Cohen (can I get a “holy shit”?). I’m planning on going to Coachella with Yanira, so I’ve been catching up on Paul’s recent work. Pretty good album, I like the hard sound to it.

4. Memory Almost Full by Paul McCartney
This album gets a bad rap, but I like it a lot. “Dance Tonight” was the first song I learned how to play on the mandolin. “House of Wax” is a weird song though. I think that’s why the bookstore I work at has about 7 copies of it for sale.

5. Electric Arguments by Paul McCartney
Paul’s latest. I downloaded it, burned it, and took it with me to the store on Saturday. I need to listen to it more but it sounds interesting. Very avant garde, I like it. If you look at the CD you can see everything misspelled. I did this after accidentally writing a “B” instead of a “P.” In for a penny, in for a pound.
